The Bahrain Championship is a professional snooker tournament. From the 2008-09 season, it is a ranking event, attended by the world's top 16 players plus 16 qualifiers.
The event is the first ranking tournament to be held in the kingdom of Bahrain and has been staged as part of World Snooker's continuing efforts to popularise the game in more territories.

The 2008 Bahrain Championship, the fourth ranking professional snooker tournament of the 2008/2009 season, is the first edition of the Bahrain Championship tournament. It will take place between 8 November and 15 November 2008 at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre, Manama, Bahrain.

Due to a clash with a previously-arranged Premier League matchday, three leading players (John Higgins, Mark Selby and Ding Junhui) have all been forced to miss the event. This means they will earn zero ranking points, while three extra players (world #17 Matthew Stevens, #18 Ken Doherty and #19 Jamie Cope qualify automatically. Likewise, the players ranked from 33-35 and 49-51 will play one qualifier less than usual. Four players have received byes in the first round of qualifying due to these absentees. Additionally, Ronnie O'Sullivan withdrew three days before the tournament for unspecified medical reasons.

Steve Davis is also involved in Premier League action on that night. He played his qualifying match and then received a walkover due to intended opponent O'Sullivan withdrawing, meaning that he reaches the last sixteen but may be forced out after this.
